07 Feb A Quick Escape to the Mountains of San Jeronimo

Medellín is an awesome modern metropolis, but sometimes you just need a breath of fresh air. Whether you’re working, studying or just passing through, you must visit San Jeronimo and Santa Fe, both small towns tucked away in the mountains just an hour away.
 .
As a traveler, I always know that the destination will be extraordinary when the journey requires more than a bus ride.  And I was right, the dusty and bumpy ride in the mototaxi or tuk-tuk instantly rewards you with panoramic mountain views.
 .
There’s something about going further away from the city that instantly melts my stress away. It was quite a pleasant surprise to see Spanish style houses and huge modern mansions with their own swimming pools randomly dotted along the horizon. I was in the middle of nowhere and I loved it!

Hostal La Finca
.
The sound of the engine strangely quieted my mind as we zigzagged across the mountain side. We made a sharp left to a gated community and parked on their front lawn. Two very happy dogs greeted me, Cana and Chiqui, my new best friends and tour guides for the next couple of days.
 .
Hostal La Finca is owned by a German-Colombian family and is managed by son Alexis and his partner Mathilde. Their lifelong dream of opening a sustainable place finally happened when they found this property in the countryside, with no less than a waterfall in their backyard of course. They strived for than just opening the usual backpacker hostel, they envisioned it to be a relaxing place where travelers from all over the globe can bond, share stories and ideas with each other.
.
As if almost by fate, I discovered them by chance. I e-mailed them to make a reservation when the person on the other end, Mathilde replied:
.
“I think I went to a yoga class you were teaching in Kuta, Lombok in this vegetarian restaurant just out of town with amazing views. I could be wrong – your face just looks really familiar! :)”
The world is getting smaller by the day. Who would’ve thought that she and I would meet again in the mountains of Colombia?!

.From the Heart

.
Everyone gathers around the heart of the Finca, the kitchen while making and sharing meals. One evening, I made some Indian style Veg Curry and made everyone try it, a little too spicy for most I guess! There are dozens of mangoes and other fruits free for guests.
.
Cornelius and Karin from Austria were volunteering at Hostal La Finca at that time. They toured me around the garden where they helped grow vegetables and fruit bearing trees. We picked a basket-full of limes for a refreshing limonada in the afternoon then practiced yoga at the wooden deck until the sun disappeared behind the mountains.

.
Las Cascadas
.
Don’t forget your swim wear as there are two lovely waterfalls in the area. Take a refreshing dip at the smaller one which is literally just a 10 minute hike down their backyard. The bigger one is about half an hour hike away through the jungle. Ask any of the staff for directions.

El Pueblo
.
The colorful picturesque towns of both San Jeronimo and Santa Fe are just a tuk-tuk ride away. Recharge your camera’s batteries as you’ll want to capture the vibrant images of these places which seem to have been frozen in time.
.
 .
Run to the Mountains
 .
From Medellín, Catch a Metro ride to Terminal Caribe which directly connects to Terminal Norte. Head to ticket booth 19 or 20 to purchase a bus ticket for CBP 8,000 or collectivo ticket for CBP 16,000.
.
They leave every half hour everyday. The ride through the long tunnel towards the north east of Medellin was a welcome break from the heat. Try to find a seat on the right side of the vehicle, away from the noon time sun if you want to arrive feeling refreshed.
.
We reached San Jeronimo after just a little over an hour, the big yellow Exito building can’t be missed. The last stop is the town’s park just a few blocks away, but you may wish to get off at the supermarket to grab some things if you’re planning to cook a feast.
.
There are lots mototaxis or tuk-tuks waiting for passengers by the building ready bring you all they way up to Hostal La Finca. For CBP 25,000, each tuk-tuk can easily carry 2 passengers with heavy backpacks or up to 3 if luggage is lighter.

“Life is a colourful and rich gift, we want to raise that awareness with our guests. La Finca is a place made with love, inspiration, passionate and dedication. We would like to remind guests to fully enjoy their lives by sharing happiness and showing gratitude.
We want to be an ecologically sustainable and socially responsible example on how conscious, green tourism and life could look like –
stirring towards making this world an even better one.

The right place – the right time – with the right people.”
